What Is Hospice Care?

At its center, hospice care is all about being compassionate toward the individual who is suffering. Hospice attempts to alleviate the symptoms of a disease rather than the disease itself. This is typically done because doctors have not been able to scale back the illness with treatment.

In cases like these, when a terminal illness is rapidly progressing and cannot be stopped, hospice steps in. What exactly does hospice care look like? Since its main purpose is to make a patient comfortable, hospice might include keeping the patient in a bed most or all of the time. A palliative doctor may prescribe painkillers or another kind of medication that dulls or eliminates the pain and discomfort of a disease’s worst symptoms. All of this is done so that patients can live out the time they have left focusing on what is most important to them, such as speaking with family, friends or spiritual counselors.
